Dear Club Amarone Friends, the summer starts to go to an end and in Valpolicella we are now harvesting vintage 2011. As you may know August is usually a pretty slow month in Italy.  It is hot and everyone tries to go on vacation; even restaurants and movie houses are closed “per ferie” for vacation.  The growth cycle of the grapes is almost finished and everyone is just waiting for September to roll over to start the harvest.  However this was not the case for Villa Monteleone Winery this year; lots of things were going on.

Chalices under the Stars:  On August 10th many events and gatherings were held to celebrate the night of the shooting stars.  Late at night on the 10th it is always hoped to catch a glimpse of a real shooting star.  In the Valpolicella, on the grounds of the Church of Santa Maria Valverde in Marano di Valpolicella, right on top of a hill far away from the city lights, a wine tasting accompanied by food, music and even telescopes to look at the full moon and the stars, was held to present the medals which had been awarded in contest “La Selezione del Sindaco”, held in Torrecuso, Italy,  May 27 to 29,  2011.

Villa Monteleone received a Gold Medal for the Amarone DOC Classico della Valpolicella “Villa Monteleone” 2006 and a Silver Medal for the Valpolicella DOC Classico Ripasso “Campo San Vito” 2008.  It was a beautiful and very pleasant night, even if we did not get to see any shooting stars!

August started less warm than usual but it sure has made up for it in the last 12 days.  The temperatures have been very high for this time of the year: high 90s.  We are hoping and praying for some respite soon, dreaming of cool weather and some rain. In Verona the 89th Lyric Festival, which runs from June to early September, entered its last leg.  The program for August included  La Traviata, Aida, Romeo and Juliet, Nabucco,  and La Bohème .  If you ever come to Verona in summer this is an absolute must; quite a spectacle in the very well preserved Arena, which dates from the 1st century AD and seats 15,000 spectators.

Alchemy: Paul Howard, from the Association of Wine Educators, wrote an article in Wine Alchemy regarding the Valpolicella DOC Classico “Campo Santa Lena” 2009 and naming it  WINE OF THE MONTH for August:

Last but not least, our B&B
,  which has only 3 rooms,  received a Certificate of Excellence for 2011 from TRIP ADVISOR because of the wonderful reviews received from our clients.

We are now getting ready and anxious to start harvest and making the new vintage wines.

Best wishes from,
Lucia D. Raimondi and the whole staff at Villa Monteleone Winery
